This series consists of school censuses. The records, submitted on standard forms, provide information on Indian children attending schools. The information provided in the census records varies, but chiefly includes the names of the children; sex; ages; the family relationship; the tribal affiliation; the degree of Indian blood; the names of the parents or guardians; and the names of the schools attended. The records include censuses of children from the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska for 1893 and 1896; censuses of children from the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska for 1916 and 1925; censuses of Wisconsin Winnebago Nation Indian children attending Tomah Indian School for 1927 and 1933, with a supplemental census for 1935; and a census of Indian and white children attending Winnebago Agency Indian schools for 1953, with a supplemental census for 1958. The records include related correspondence.

The Tomah Indian School was authorized as a nonreservation boarding school in 1891 and opened in 1893. The Tomah Indian School was given agency duties in 1911 for the Hocak (Winnebago) Indians of Wisconsin. Agency duties were transferred to the Grand Rapids Agency in 1916, but in 1927 that agency-level jurisdiction was consolidated with the Tomah School, which regained its agency status.
